Law Marketing – How To Increase Your Revenue By An Average Of 27%.::. http://internet-freak.blogspot.com/

Law marketing is not that complex. It is much easier than becoming a
lawyer! Here is a brief listing of law marketing items in order of
importance telling you how to get more than a 27% increase on average
in revenue within one year using marketing for lawyers well.

1. Raise client fees by at least 5% now – most attorneys can
do so, however, they don’t know it. Marketing for lawyers
involves understanding pricing strategies and techniques.

2. Capture all billable hours – many attorneys are not
keeping contemporaneous time. They are doing it at the end of the day,
the end of the week or even the end of the month. Plus they are
“writing down” their time from fear the client will protest
the amount of time so they cut the time. There is at least a 5% to 10%
increase in revenue here for many attorneys. You will have less law
marketing to do if you get paid for the work you are doing now.

3. Begin to bill for legal assistants – I still find solo and
small firm attorneys who are not billing for legal assistants time. In
marketing for lawyers it is a good strategy to bill for legal
assistants given the way managers and entrepreneurs make money is by
leveraging themselves on the work of others. Additionally, it is in the
best interest of the client to have the least expensive yet
appropriately competent staff to do the work if possible.

4. Begin to hold your team accountable for billable hours –
start small with requiring 20 hours per week of billable time and then
move it up to 30 hours per week over time. Do figure out a bonus plan
for them as well to give them an incentive to hit the mark. Failure to
hold staff accountable is often caused in law practice management by
the desire to be liked. Managers are not always liked although they
don’t have to be feared either.

5. Begin to have all timekeepers doing only timekeeping work and
hire a secretary/receptionist to allow them to focus on billable time.
In marketing for lawyers your timekeeping staff needs to be focusing on
the timekeeping not non-billable work that can be done by less costly
but competent staff.

6. Hire some team/more team – some solos don’t have any
staff and many solo/small firms do not have enough/the right staff.

7. Identify your top two or three revenue producing practice areas
and limit your practice to those practice areas. Do only law marketing
into your two or three selected practice areas.

8. Refer out (if ethically appropriate) or at least stop taking C &
D clients and get A & B client files moving faster with more
referrals coming in due to the happy A & B clients telling others
about you. This is one of the best law marketing strategies since it
gives velocity to your word of mouth with good clients who are loyal to
you not loyal to your price.

9. Begin relationship law marketing to existing A&B referral
sources that will result in more business fast as well as asking them
to introduce you to their A&B colleagues that will result in more
A&B referral sources.

10. Getting a handle on time management will enable the attorney
and the team to get more billable hours in the same work hours and/or
more velocity on contingency cases thus more revenue. This also means
less marketing for lawyers time needed or more time for law marketing
if needed.

11. Begin to ask clients for referrals (multiple times, multiple
ways and in systematic ways) and ask clients to introduce you to other
influencers they know. This is a stellar marketing for lawyers
strategy.

12. Create a website that works on the CTPM model. Don’t know
what the CTPM model is? See my website under the Internet marketing tab
for openers.

13. Begin using law marketing direct mail strategies – here I
am talking about regular mailings to your database at the very least
and consider other direct mail strategies particularly to potential
referral sources.

14. Begin using marketing for lawyers radio advertising –
this can work well for some in small markets or if you can target your
client market accurately it works well in a larger market.

15. Begin using law marketing TV advertising – only if you
are in a smaller market or can target well on a cable channel is my
best advice and never do TV advertising before you have done all of the
other things above since you may have no need if you did all the other
things above.

Well, there you go. Law marketing is not that complex to
understand. It is a more difficult to implement of course thus the

whom you can communicate about your niche. Other names a forum is
commonly referred to are message boards, electronic discussion boards,
bulletin boards, discussion forums and discussion groups. Every niche
has hundred of Forums to choose from. The great thing about forums is
that you can target a certain group of people that fit the demographics
you are looking for.

Forum marketing is what this article is all about. Forum Marketing is
basically the methods and techniques one uses on a forum in order to
legally drive free website traffic to your site without violating the
forums Terms of Service. In other words, what can you do to drive
traffic to your site without breaking any of the rules of the forum?

There are anonymous forums allowing for full anonymity that allow
post without registering. Then there are the forums that require that

ranking very high up (maybe even the first page) of the search engines
for your various keywords.

Often times anonymity plays an important role for the forum
participant. You will find that people on forums are more apt to
discuss even topics they would never consider discussing in person with
others. They will talk about anything and everything online.

By visiting forums and taking note of what people are most concerned
about you can search the Internet for products and services that will
help them solve those problems. Gather the information about the topic.
Write or have written for you articles about the topic. In this way you
can find a topic and build a content-rich website for niche marketing
that helps with the problem you have identified and that will serve the
needs of people. This is a neat way to satisfy the need to know what
the problem is before you put out the product solution to the problem.
Most writers, especially newbie's, will put together a product before
identifying their marketing, kind of like putting the cart before the
horse.. By paying attention to the concerns of people on your niche
forums, you are approaching the idea of product development in the
correct way kind of like putting the horse before the cart, which is,
of course, where the horse is supposed to be.

In applying the concept above, you will also be quite successful in
identifying great niche marketing websites you can build. A unique way
of expanding on your new website idea is to pose various questions on
the forums you have joined and elicit multiple answers on major issues
of concern. Post a question that will produce many responses and use
those responses to write an e-book on the topic. The fact is that many
people will buy an e-book that is filled with information they could
actually gather for themselves. They will also purchase e-books that
will tell them what other people with the same problem they have think
about or are doing about their common problem.

How to Set Up a Totally Free Direct Mail Program for Your Mortgage Business

Glad to see that this article caught your attention. You're going to
love this amazing little direct mail mortgage marketing strategy.

This super simple idea will actually allow you to mail 500 or 1,000
or 10,000 or even more...postcards and/or fliers each week for
free...all of this without you having to pay one single cent for
postage. In fact, this idea is so profitable, that a number of mortgage
professionals notified me that they replicated the idea multiple times
and created their own lucrative direct mail companies outside of their
mortgage businesses. Now that's powerful!

Forgive me for jumping ahead here. Let's start back at the very beginning and explore the details of this idea.

The most expensive part of a direct mail campaign is your postage.
For that reason alone, you may not currently be using direct mail in
your mortgage business. Your next most expensive item will be your
list. The postcard might cost you a few cents apiece to print depending
on your quantity. So that's almost nothing.

What all of this boils down to is that it's pretty tough to get a
mailing out these days for less than 55 cents each or maybe 65 cents
apiece. So that makes direct mail pretty darn pricey. So here's what
you do to avoid paying postage, list rental, printing, and even make a
profit using this idea.

First, you find out how many people live in your marketing area. What
you want is the number of residences in your area. The post office will
show you how to do a "Dear Resident" mailing. The post office will
deliver your "Dear Resident" postcard very cheap if you are trying to
hit every household in a certain zip code or set of zip codes.

If you'd like to personalize the carrier envelope, just look under the
Yellow Pages under the category labeled "Mailing Lists," and you'll
find a list of local companies that can help you. However,
personalization is not a requirement. In fact, most loan officers that
use direct mail address their offers to "Dear Resident." You'll also
find this reduces costs substantially.

Second, let's say you find out that there are some 12,275 residences in
the targeted area you want to reach. What you now do is approach other
businesses that would also be interested in reaching these same people
with a postcard advertisement. Ask these businesses if they would like
to spend, say, 20 or 25 cents instead of 55 or 65 cents to reach a
potential customer in their target market.

As a reminder, only approach businesses with this idea that are not
competing with you and your mortgage business. There are tons of
businesses willing to participate and a good letter promoting the
concept will keep your waiting list constantly filled.

All of this sounds pretty simple, doesn't it?

Well, it is. In fact, the odds are good you already receive a
mailing like this. There are a number of companies out there that will
provide this service for you at a cost. They are called "card deck
mailings." Just type "card deck mailing" into Google, and you'll see
all kinds of companies come up in the listing that will do your card
deck mailing for you. Better yet, when you receive your next
mailing...call and check out their pricing. Your card will be ganged in
with all the other merchants.

But here's the simple truth. You can save a lot of money my doing these
mailings yourself. They are really very easy to do. There is something
to be said for that old adage "If you want it done right, do you it
yourself." You'll have total control of the process. And especially
total control of who is getting your mailing. Very often, the "card
deck" mailing companies hit to big a geographical area and include too
many folks outside your marketing area. So, do it yourself so you can
be certain you're only paying to reach those people you want to reach.

Also, you can gang together more than just postcards in an
envelope. You can also gang fliers, letters and other advertising
materials. Although I have seen some "card deck" mailings arrive in
clear shrink wrap, plain old envelopes work just great.

But whether you do it yourself, or use a company that specializes in
card deck mailings, this is a very cost effective way to advertise your
business in your local marketing area.

But there is one key you need to be mindful of to make this kind of a
mailing work for you. You need to make sure your mortgage message
stands out from the other messages in your mailing package. Again,
don't offer this opportunity to your competitors...only to those
businesses that want to reach the same people in your marketing area.

Here's a great opportunity to actually make money in two businesses.

You'll make money in your mortgage business by promoting your company
via your mailing...that is, with your own postcard or flier. And, you
can make lots of money selling your direct mail program to your co-op
mailing partners. Just mark-up the cost. A 15% mark-up or so to
compensate you for your work and initiative is certainly reasonable,
and you'll still be under pricing the big national "card deck" mailing
services. When you get all your prices together, you may find that you
can demand an even larger mark-up.

Start mailing your co-op mailings once a month, and then increase
the frequency as you get your systems and procedures in place. I'm sure
you can see that there is some great money to be made doing this. If
you've got some guts and ambition, you can work this system to a point
where you are mailing countless card decks and other co-op mailings per
week with very little if any cash outlay. Your co-op mailing partners
are funding the entire process and even paying in advance for the
privilege of working with you.

I'll let you do the math here on what you could make with this idea if
you just mark-up the cost a minimum of 15% to your co-op mailing
partners. You may need to consider a part-time assistant early on to
make this work for you. Of course, nothing will work if you don't work
the plan. To get this system up and running will take a little
initiative and some oomph on your part.

At the very least, use this little trick to conduct direct mail
marketing campaigns for your mortgage business at no cost to you. It's
not at all hard to find six or eight or ten or more businesses that
will be more than happy to sign-up for the program and participate with
you.

Whether you want to write about yourself, be written about, or write about someone else, ask yourself these two questions:

* Are you making a difference in a big way?

Genevieve Piturro, founder of the Pajama Project, gets a "yes" on both
counts. Her charity gives new pajamas to abused and poor kids, many
whose mothers are in prison. Some of these children never owned any
pajamas, and certainly not new ones. When you think about children
going to sleep at night in a fresh pair of pajamas instead of tattered,
dirty clothes, it conjures an image of safety and home.

Pitturo scored big on two points: She tapped into one of Oprah's
key areas of importance: abused children. And she created a remarkable
endeavor that attracted many people's interest, given the story’s
emotional pull. It made me want to hurry and buy pajamas and donate
money to this worthy cause.

3. Your pitch must be well-written.

O's readers expect the content to dig deep into emotional,
physical, and spiritual wellbeing on many levels. Oprah's magazine
delivers on this expectation by seeking out top authors and freelancers
from the best national magazines and newspapers in the country. They
look for writers from publications like the New York Times to Wired to
write on topics as diverse as women slavery to how men really feel
about breast implants to the death of a beloved dog.

You can either be interviewed by these experienced writers or write a
feature on a topic that touches the heart of the O magazine reader.

It may take you 1 to 2 years to get published in O, The Oprah
Magazine. But I've haven't met one soul who said it wasn't worth it.

direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has
imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." So
if getting in O is one of your dreams, keep advancing toward it with
all the steadiness of a tulip reaching toward the sun.

Most affiliate marketers think that PPC or Pay Per Click campaigns are
better at driving traffic, as compared to article marketing.
They’re wrong. The fact is, article marketing carries with it far
less risk and much more impact than PPC campaigns.

How does PPC work?

For those of you new to PPC, here’s an overview on how it
works. Basically, PPC uses advertisements to get a reader’s
attention. Once the reader clicks on the ad, the affiliate marketer
earns a commission. A lot of research and money goes into placing ads
in strategic positions. The competition is so fierce that organizations
scramble to get their products listed in the PPC campaigns. Millions of
dollars are spent each day on these campaigns.

Why spend so much when you can avoid it?

Yes, PPC campaigns, for all their hype, do not provide the same
results as article marketing does. Why is it that article marketing is
better than PPC?

Credibility: Article marketing helps an affiliate marketer to
establish credibility on the subject. Writing for an extended period of
time on a related subject establishes the person as a ‘subject
matter expert’. This ensures more customers will turn to you for
any information on this subject. PPC does not provide any such platform
to establish credibility.

Inexpensive: Article marketing is free. It doesn’t cost a
dime to start writing and posting articles on directories. PPC, on the
other hand, requires plenty of investment to get the company listed
among search engine results. With such tough competition around, if you
don’t have adequate funds, someone else will get listed.

Low risk: Article marketing is less risky when compared to PPC.
It’s free and therefore, even if you take some time to succeed,
it won’t have an adverse impact. Whereas in PPC, the initial
investment is so high, that not finding success can mean incurring
heavy losses.

Displacement: With PPC, there is always the fear of being displaced
by competitors. People are willing to shell out top dollar just to get
their company listed. In article marketing, there is no such danger
involved.

When it comes to marketing the choices are clear: market to your
reader. But the “where” to find your reader has changed as
more and more of our lives migrate online. A recent article on how
offline media is succumbing to the ’Net talked about a flurry of
newspapers diving into online content, online ad placement, and online
forums to push more of their feature pieces, reviews and editorials
into a virtual medium.

Even industry standards like the Wall Street Journal and the New York
Times are moving more and more of their content to the website. So what
does this mean for you? Well, it means that the lines between on and
offline are becoming even more blurred. It used to be that if you had a
few select publications that you were pitching you could contact their
on and offline departments and possibly be considered for interviews or
feature pieces in both of them; that’s not the case anymore.
Sometime an online feature means that you can kiss your offline
exposure goodbye, so it’s good to ask before you start pitching.
Much of the online content is now pulled from the offline source, so
while this could work in your favor, better to be certain if you have
your eye on print coverage. That said, you might be better off being on
their website, where you’ll get lasting exposure.

But media promotion isn’t the only factor in marketing, in fact,
there’s a lot you can do without even heading into the media
realm. Consider these ideas:

can be a good way to start your network and gain additional exposure.
Also, sites like MySpace have gotten a bad rap as predator sites, but
only a marginal portion of people on this site are there for nefarious
reasons. While the MySpace age does tend to skew younger, there’s
virtually a place for everyone and every message on this site. Not a
MySpace person? Try http://eons.com instead, this site targets the over 50 crowd and offers another great place to market your book and message.

* YouTube: this site isn’t just for singing pancakes; in fact,
more and more authors are moving snippets of signings, speaking gigs or
other visual promotion tools to this hot new resource. It’s a
great link back to your site.

* Social bookmarking: have you been doing your social duty lately? Posting to sites like http://del.i.cious.com
could really help to spread your message like wildfire. Sometimes a few
sites is all it takes to start the buzz going in your market.

* Consider the overlooked media: As the bigger papers are moving
their content online and vying to keep readership interested, the
smaller overlooked papers like The Bastrop Daily Enterprise in
Louisiana and Arkadelphia Daily Siftings Herald in Arkansas are
booming. Their readership is loyal and their papers always hungry for
content. Have you poked around in the smaller regional newspapers yet?
If you haven’t, you might want to. You might find that while
it’s great to have an online presence, the further we get into
Web 2.0, the more these publications are overlooked by pr people.

5 Characteristics of Marketing 2.0 and Why You Should Care

If you’re online at all these days, you probably hear a lot about
Web 2.0. Marketing 2.0. is the counter to the latest engaging tools of
technology. Here are five characteristics of Marketing 2.0:

• First, it is interactive. No longer are we forced to sit on
the couch and take our daily dose of advertising. We now can jump in
the television (or computer) and change the color of the background,
choose what pose the personality takes, and tell them how we like to
get our messages. More or less.

Take YouTube, for example. What started out as a way for teenagers
to post inane videos of skateboarding falls has turned into the single
biggest factor affecting media today. Yes, there are still the
“idiot videos,” but now they’re mixed in with product
spoofs, commercials that are actually interesting, and now even
political debates. What used to be solely for the tech-savvy consumer
is now being wooed by major players like CNN.

YouTube works because it is interactive. Once you view a video you
can share it with friends. That’s how something like a silly
Transformers rap has been viewed over 510,000 times!

• Marketing 2.0 is a conversation between consumers and
companies. Since we have all but removed commercials from our
television viewing repertoire thanks to Tivo, companies have to find
new ways to reach their audience. That means they have to ask consumers
what they want. They’re listening for once!

Blogs and forums allow companies to take off their professional
mask and get comfortable with their customers. It gives a comfortable,
informal voice to the company. Take the Apple Blog. Readers can get
updates on Apple products as well as comment on posts. They’re in
essence creating a dialog that hasn’t previously been available.

• Democracy is what Marketing 2.0 is all about. If the public
doesn’t like it, it won’t float. Or will it? Sometimes
there is a public outcry so loud you can hear it from cyberspace. A few
months ago, an illegal HD DVD encryption code was posted online.
Bloggers found the code and spread it like wildfire, using, among
others, Digg as a tool to spread it. The problem? HD DVD is one of
Digg’s sponsors, so the founder of Digg received a cease and
desist order from the company.

The original post was removed, but it was like pulling a leg off a
centipede. The code continued to spread. Eventually the founder had to
throw his hands up, knowing that democratic media had gotten the best
of the situation.

• Marketing 2.0 efforts are always non-traditional. There are
no rules. This is good in that any business can devise a new method of
marketing, but bad because nothing is guaranteed.

Here’s an example of Marketing 2.0 gone awry: at the
beginning of 2007, Cartoon Network launched a marketing campaign for
its show “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” in Boston. The campaign
involved the placement throughout the city of several lightboards with
cartoon characters on them. Someone cried “terrorism!” and
the project was shut down. Hard. With police action. The situation
might have been an overreaction, but the head of Cartoon Network
resigned as a result. Not every idea is a good idea.

• Finally, Marketing 2.0 is flexible. If you’re used to
booking year long phone book ads, this is the complete opposite. Any
marketing tool can be changed or stopped relatively easily, and the
majority of Marketing 2.0 is affordable (blogs, for example, are free).
Creating a strong marketing mix will involve hits and misses, so it is
important that you be able to change your marketing plan on a dime.

Now that you understand Marketing 2.0, how will you use it? The
longer you take to shift gears from “old school” marketing
to Marketing 2.0, the more customers you will lose as a result. Take

Creating multiple streams of income is an important factor when
considering any type of business. Affiliate marketing is no exception.
By creating multiple streams of income it ensures your survival should
one source fail for any reason.

Having multiple streams of income can be equated to McDonalds serving
chicken sandwiches even though they're a burger joint. If you put all
your eggs in one basket you're just looking for trouble. Also, as an
affiliate it's fairly easy to setup multiple streams of income because
there is usually an abundance of different programs with decent
products available.

Within most niches you'll probably even be able to find products that
complement each other instead of competing with each other. This is an
excellent way to bolster your affiliate earnings.

The first order of business is to get your own web site. Something
basic will do as you won't be needing too much web space. There are
very inexpensive hosting plans available today, some as cheap as $3.95
a month.

Next you'll need a domain name. These are also very inexpensive and can be purchased for under $10 for a whole year.

Your domain name is very important. You'll want to try to include the
name of the niche you're targeting in the domain name itself if you can
and if it's not too long. If you're looking at the dog grooming niche
for example you may want a name like "doggroomingtips.com" or
"doggroomingsecrets.com" or something similar.

The next project on your agenda when attempting to achieve multiple
streams of affiliate income should be to create your email capture
page.

Your capture page should be your top priority. Consider this your sales
page even though you won't be selling anything in the true sense of the
word. By capturing the name and email address of your prospects before
sending them to the merchants site you'll build a list that you can
send other offers to whether they purchase from the original merchant
or not.

It's been said many times by the internet's top marketers, "The money's
in the list"! This rings true for affiliate marketers as well as
product creators. You can build a list by writing a special report
pertaining to the niche you're targeting. Perhaps you can write a
review of the product you're promoting or a "top ten" list of reasons
to use the product. Offer the report for free so long as your visitor
leaves their name and email address. Use a double opt-in autoresponder
to protect yourself from unethical folks.

After the prospect has confirmed their address send them to the
download page of your special report. And a word of advice - Don't just
send a download link. By sending them to an HTML web page you can
sprinkle in links to different affiliate products.

Also, write up 7-10 emails to go out at 2-3 day intervals, each
highlighting a different aspect of the main product you're promoting.
Then you can add more emails to go out at 7-10 day intervals exposing
your readers to different products in the same niche. Explain how these
products complement your main product and why your reader would benefit
from the purchase.

By setting up a few of these simple sites offering an array of special
reports in one niche you'll be promoting several different affiliate
products within that niche.

Find a variety of other profitable niches to target, repeat the above
process and soon you'll have a whole network of sites funneling
prospects into your sales process. The result -You'll soon have
multiple streams of affiliate income in several different niches
producing substantial income.

Keywords help you form your business. If you really want to reach your
niche, you need to know what keywords will work for them. You have to

The Big Affiliate Lie

Top affiliate marketing experts tell you that only 1 out of 100
affiliates ever really do anything with the business. Yet, they tell
everyone how much money they can make as an affiliate! Do you see a
problem here?

Having a 1% chance of success is not the kind of business I want to
start. That's even worse than the average retail business...No thanks.
It's a good thing you don't have to accept those odds.

Those odds are for the average "Joe." Let me tell you how the average
Joe markets the affiliate program...including their thought process.

They see an affiliate program paying 50% commission and their mind
jumps to attention. They can make $50 off every $100 sale...They don't
have to write any ads...and all they have to do is follow the
step-by-step system already laid out for them.

In other words, they don't even have to think either! They jump at the chance and sign up for Free.

They get the instructions emailed to them from the affiliate manager.
The instructions tell them to take this 5 line ad and place it in
ezines. So they say, "OK, I can afford $40 for an ad." They place the
ad and one sale occurs. Good. They at least made a $10 profit.

They say, "Hmmm, maybe that ezine wasn't that good of one." So they
place two more ads for $75 and $100. One of these ads does well and
makes 2 sales. They earned a $25 profit (paying $75 for the ad). The
second ad only made one sale. They lost $50 on this one (since they
paid $100 for the ad). They have now made 4 sales, and have lost a
total $15.

They give up on this affiliate program in frustration. They join
another affiliate program hoping this one will be answer. Maybe that
last one just didn't sell good enough. This new affiliate program tells
you to place "Pay-Per-Click" search engine advertising.

He says, "Yes, that's the answer. They had me placing the wrong advertising!"

Average "Joe" now spends all day coming up with keywords. He finds out
that there aren't many 1 penny opportunities out there anymore...and
that you have to spend 10 cents, 20 cents, or more for most of the
keywords. So he ends up paying $100 the first month for clickthroughs
and makes 3 sales.

This affiliate program pays the same commission so this adds up to $50
in profit. The same amount of clickthroughs occur the next month, but
only 2 sales occur. So, average Joe just breaks even this month.

So average Joe gives up on this affiliate program and joins a new one.
This time average "Joe" says, "I know the secret now. I have to only
use Free advertising." So Joe spends 10 hours writing his first article
and sends it out to ezines.

One of them runs the article and 1 sale occurs. So average "Joe" earns
$50. The only problem is that this breaks down to only $5 an hour once
you count the amount of time spent to produce this sale. Average "Joe"
could have done a lot better working overtime at their job!

So average "Joe" says forget it to the whole idea...

Let's take a look at what happened. Sometimes money would be made.
Other times money was lost. Do you notice who makes a profit no matter
what happens...and never has to risk a penny? That's right. The
affiliate manager makes money no matter what!

The average affiliate may earn or lose money. The affiliate manager
only pays them when they generate a profit. So the affiliate manager
wins on the deal whether the advertising system they write up for their
affiliates works well or not.

The deck is stacked against the average affiliate. They only had a 1% chance of playing this game and winning.

Let's change the odds.

The big myth of online affiliate programs is that someone will "hand"
you a good income. All you have to do is sign up for Free, and it's
like money in the bank. Most people realize this, but the affiliate
program managers make it sound so easy sometimes.

The key to becoming a successful affiliate is to stack the deck in your
favor. This will shock some people, but I'll say it anyway.

The best way to succeed in an affiliate program is NOT to lead people
to the product site. The best way isn't to build a mini-site that leads
into the product site either. Both of those methods promote the
affiliate manager...and leave you out of the profit loop.

The best way to make money in affiliate programs is to build an opt-in
email list and then promote one affiliate product after another to your
list. The purpose of your web site is to build a list. If you're doing
anything else with it, then you're missing out.

Focus on building your list...and then selling the products you
affiliate with. Then, you become the one in control. It's your list. If
you want to promote Suzy's product, then you do it. If Suzy doesn't pay
you well enough, then you can promote someone else's product. You still
OWN the list.

You can change income streams, but you own the RIVER.

There is another aspect to Internet marketing that makes waves to those
who are starting up in the business. It is called opt-in and permission
based marketing. It works so well because it is something that
possesses three characteristics that is not that emphasized in other
techniques of Internet marketing.

Opt-in and permission based marketing is clearly a star in its own
right when it comes to converting your prospects into buyers. This is
where much of the favorable client and businessman relationship
flourishes well. Briefly, we describe here the three characteristics of
opt-in and permission based marketing.

Personal

This is definitely the first adjective in the magic three. Personal
correspondence never fails to get the consumers’ attention. Just
put yourself in the position of your lead. Wouldn’t you be just
as exasperated opening another cold and uncaring email that is just
obviously trying to siphon off some of their money for selfish
pursuits?

If you want to be an Internet marketer with an effective opt-in
listing, you must treat your leads like human being—complete with
emotion, calling them by their first name (you can actually automate
that!), and making them know that beyond marketing, you genuinely care
about them. This is not something you do to flatter. It will not pan

unexpected marketing pitches is that they instantly go to the trash
bin. Meanwhile, if you have the person under your opt-in list, they
will really wait for the newsletter to arrive at their email inbox. The
fact that they took the time to subscribe to your site means that they
are willing to allot your updates some time. This is really a good
opportunity to seize.

Relevant

This is also another important facet of permission based marketing. The
content of your newsletter must be relevant to what the person has
subscribed. Since this is an anticipated marketing form, you will have
to meet certain expectations as to the content and its relevance to
their particular needs. This is where other marketing strategies fail.

In permission based marketing, it already answers the
“what’s in it for me?” quality that most customers
look for through the relevance of the things they gain from the
effective Internet marketer.

Prove You're The Solution

We generate attention and interest for our business by focusing on
results, not process, but that's not enough to make the sale.

The initial reaction we get from our marketing message is key. But then
our analytical minds tend to kick in and start to ask questions.

"How does this work?" "Will this work for me?" "How long will it
take?" "Is that really possible?" "Who else has done it?" "Can they
prove it?"

And, if you don't answer those questions, you're in deep trouble.

Last week I got a cold call from a VOIP provider. This is telephone
service over the Internet. I'd heard a lot about it and it costs much
less than regular telephone service, so I was interested. They already
had my attention.

But then I asked the question that was most important to me, "Is
the sound quality of VOIP as good as my regular phone line? Saving
money is important to me but not if the cost is a loss of quality,
since I do so much business by phone."

I waited for them to prove it to me, and I was disappointed.

The best they could do was, "The quality has increased quite a bit recently." Boy, was that persuasive!

Now who knows? The quality might have been just fine. But they did
a very poor job of proving it to me. So I said, "No thank you!"

When you're marketing your services, the biggest problem for you to
solve shouldn't be getting someone's attention. That's relatively easy.
The biggest challenge is to prove that you can produce the results you
promise.

And when most Independent Professionals are challenged to prove
that they can deliver results, guess what happens? Believe it or not,
they once again revert back to process. They talk about how they do
what they do.

Your prospect: "You can reduce employee attrition by 30%? OK, how do you do that?"

You: "Well we use Jawarski's Attrition Reduction Protocol that
identifies the seven drivers of employee dissatisfaction and maps them
on a grid to determine your primary mitigation strategies."

Well, isn't that interesting... Not!

I assure you that a prospect for your services is not looking for
that kind of answer - almost never! That's not proof. In fact, it
sounds more like a smoke screen. Instead, they want to know:

What companies you've reduced attrition by 30% or more?

Were these companies much like their company?

How long did it take to get results?

Was the process relatively easy or long and involved?

How did they measure the actual results?

If you can't answer questions like this, as far as they're concerned, you have no proof that will turn them into clients.

You need to answer their question, "How do you do that?" with an
answer that persuades. The good news is that the most powerful way to
do that is through "Success Stories" which make a solid case for your
services.

Something like this...

"The best way to answer that question is by telling you about a
client we worked with recently. They were in the same industry as you
and were frustrated that they'd been losing their best talent. We did
some assessments (the Jawarski's Attrition Reduction Protocol - but
don't tell them that!) and then helped them make some changes that
would retain their best talent.

"Within six months we'd turned around the attrition problem and by
conservative estimates saved the company $987,000 in costs to hire new
managers."

Now I don't know the results, facts and figures for your particular
business, but I'd spend a lot of time developing and practicing these
Success Stories until you can relate them with confidence and clarity.
Your success as an Independent Professional just may depend upon it.

Once you have your prospect's attention and interest, prove you can
produce results through carefully crafted Success Stories that are hard
to ignore.

Starbucks Is My Friend! – How Starbucks Has Changed My Life

I am self-employed and the mother of a newborn. What does this mean? I
am at Starbucks every single day. Multiple times each day. Sometimes
for hours each day.

Anti-consumerism aficionados beware: Starbucks, that beacon of light in
an otherwise mind-blowing, mind-boggling, or mind-numbing day (all
pertinent to being an entrepreneur and mother), has made my life
better.

Take a look at the clientele next time you enter its warm,
welcoming, rust-toned environment midday. Yes, there are those who run
in and out, rushing back to their European-made cars parked illegally
across the street. But who are the ones lounging happily in the plush
chairs, sipping their grande, half-caf, no foam, extra hot, soy
cinnamon dolce lattes? Mothers. Most often breastfeeding with $1000
strollers in tow. And the self-employed: realtors, entrepreneurs, a
certain loud-mouth rental property owner (who happens to be my uncle).
Who else can sit for 3 hours at a time, reading trashy magazines,
flipping the newspaper to the bikini girl at back, and blackberrying
the office admin staff?

Now, I am not one of the above. For one thing, I wanted one of
those $1000 strollers, but my husband is too cheap. And two, my cell
phone is 6 years old. But I do love trashy magazines…

Seriously though, I recently moved back to my hometown from a much
more metropolitan city, and it actually occurred to me that I would not
have been able to make that move if Starbucks hadn’t infiltrated
the city since I left a few years ago. Never mind the great lure of
grandparents for my children, it was simply unfathomable to consider
returning to a place void of the forest green circle.

There is nothing I love more than whiling away the afternoon at my
computer hard at work, playing with child, or trekking around town,
with that cream-colored cardboard cup of love at my side. I don’t
even order a fancy drink. Tall Bold, thank you very much.

In fact, I think my newfound biceps are not due to lugging my baby
around, but rather to holding that caffeine-filled cup in my hand for
the duration of my 5-mile walk every morning. It just isn’t
exercise if Cafe Verona doesn’t cross my lips every half-minute,
while I discuss with my sister the merits of low-fat versus no-fat.

Sometimes, I even save said coffee cup after the walk, once
emptied. I’ll actually refill it with my bland grocery store
blend at home, so I can have some degree of imitation until my next
fix. Honestly, just getting through a conference call requires my
caffeine friend on most days.

Really though, at the end of the day, it’s whatever makes you
happy. And if that little cup of joe – and perhaps a
butter-filled treat - gets me through it, so be it.

Now if only my toddler would stop screaming ‘num num’ every time we drive by said establishment…

Do You Have Affiliate Marketing Plan Yet? This May Help You...

Alright, you've made the decision that you want to make money on the
Internet. Great! That's fantastic that you've made the decision to take
contraol of your life and your finances. I just have one question for
you. Do have an affiliate marketing plan written up yet? I'm assuming
that you'll be starting off as an affiliate marketer because this is
how most people start out. Anyway, do you have any clue how you're
going to get this thing going? Let's take a look at a few things that
you'll need to consider before you begin.

Do you know what it is that you'd like to promote? If so, have you
done adequate research to determine that there's enough of a market in
order to build your business? If not, do you know how to properly
research a market in order to determine if it's potentially profitable
or not? You'll need to either know how to do this or have someone you
can trust show you how before you can do anything. Don't just start
throwing money and spending your time without having a structured plan.

Have you researched different affiliate programs to determine if
there's more than one in your market? Competition is good my friend. It
means that people are making money. If there are only one or two
affiliate merchants in the niche you are considering you might want to
look into something different, while monitoring your chosen niche for
positive activity. If it starts picking up then you'll be ready to jump
in, but if not you've saved yourself time and money.

Are you going to build your own website or have it done for you?
Are you going to be writing your own web copy or outsourcing it? Are
you aware of the expense involved with this, especially for
professional copywriting? If so, have you allowed for it in your
budget?

I'm not trying to be negative by hitting you with all of these
questions. I just want you to be aware of what you're getting into and
I want to make sure that you don't just jump into Internet Marketing
like some crazy person (me) and start throwing money around blindly,
only to find that six months and whole lot of money have gone by
without getting much accomplished. Take a look at what I talked about
before and start writing stuff down. Do some research and figuring
exactly how much this is going to cost to get you started. You can get
a blog for free and just start writing about your topic by educating
others. A lot of people have made it big by doing this alone and that
won't cost hardly anything to get started. Just get your affiliate
marketing plan in order and start taking action!

or components that fit together to make something bigger and more
complex - a machine you can play with.

And if everything isn't put together correctly, the machine doesn't run and do what it was meant to do.

On Sunday night I announced the Web site ToolKit to the InfoGuru
Support Forum and discovered that in the process of people ordering the
ToolKit, a few parts of my online "marketing machine" were broken.

They were easily fixed but it got me thinking about how everything
in marketing is much like this: it either works flawlessly or it breaks
down because some component wasn't properly attached to the other
components.

This is one reason why so many marketing activities don't produce
the result they were designed to do: attract more clients. We go
through the motions; it *looks* like marketing but the "machine" has
actually broken down and we don't realize it.

Here are three "marketing machines" you may be familiar with:

Networking - You decide to get into networking and spend a lot of
time at events meeting people, but you attract very few clients. Are
all your marketing components in place and working? Personal
presentation, Audio Logo, asking questions, business card, article to
send to potential prospects, the follow up call.

Speaking - You want to give talks to potential clients, but it's
hard to book presentations, let alone attract clients. Which marketing
of these components need work? Speaker's kit, phone call to
organizations, talk promotion, the talk itself, overheads and handouts,
a call-to-action, your follow-up email and call to interested
prospects.

Web Site - You have a web site but you're disappointed in the
results you're getting. Have you missed some of the components or
failed to fine-tune them? Quality design and text format, page
headlines, outline of problems, addressing prospects' issues, case
studies, detailed service information, free information, eZine signup,
optimized for search engines.

Every single marketing machine you create will usually work a lot better if you do the following things:

1. Do some research. Find out what works from someone who has
experience. Books, manuals, online courses, consultants and coaches
should all be considered. Don't try to make this stuff up, copy
success.

2. Create a plan. What are you going to do and when are you going
to do it? What resources do you need? What information do you have to
assemble? What written or online materials are required? Do you need to
rehearse or test before you "go live."

3. Give it your best shot. Pay attention to the details - all the
components that need to fit together for the marketing machine to work.
Fine-tune and adjust as you go. Try to look from the prospect's points
of view. Be flexible while still making a commitment to do the best you
can do.

4. Evaluate and readjust. Some things probably went well, some
could have been better, and others were total flops. Document what
worked and what didn't, so the next time you can do even better. Work
at developing a bullet-proof marketing machine that gets results every
time.

If you don't take these steps, all you can expect from your
marketing is random results. You won't have a marketing machine that's
designed to attract clients consistently. Your marketing will be like a
broken tinker toy - useless and no fun to play with.

Think of your marketing as a machine with several essential
components that all have to work in harmony to produce the marketing
results you desire - more clients attracted to your business.

Sales Productivity is a factor of two things: Available time and effective use of time.

To increase a Sales Rep's productivity we can:

Decrease time spent on non-selling activities

Increase time spent on selling activities

Make better use of selling-time

Salespeople like other professionals, have a fixed amount of available
hours during the year. Although you may put in far more hours, I'll
base this number on 40 hours per week with 52 weeks in a year, and
arrive at 2,080 hours total for the year. Your utilization of those
2,080 hours will determine your sales productivity and whether or not
you'll hit your revenue targets.

Non-selling Activities

All Salespeople are burdened with activities that don't have a direct impact on revenue.

Sales forecasts, weekly sales meetings, chasing commissions,
assisting with account receivables collection, travel and a myriad of
other activities all contribute to a reduction in selling time.

Business-performance improvement firm Proudfoot Consulting conducts
an annual survey with consistently shocking results. In their 2005
Proudfoot Productivity Report a whopping 79% of a salesperson's time
was spent on non-selling activities. Using the 2,080 hour/year figure,
only 437 hours remain to be spent on actively selling to or prospecting
for customers.

If you're a Sales Rep or a Sales Manager, you won't find this
surprising. If you're in marketing, this will give you more insight as
to why Salespeople guard their time so judiciously, and chafe at
following-up on leads of unknown quality.

Companies should take an inventory of tasks which divert
Salespeople from being in front of customers. Then systematically
create processes that will return valuable hours to the pool of
selling-time. More time to sell is a good thing. However, it's not just
the amount of selling time that's important, it's how the time is used.

Selling time

What types of activities would you consider to be selling
activities? Of the 21% of selling time found to be available by the
2005 Proudfoot study, only 11% was spent actively-selling while a full
10% was spent prospecting.

Why wouldn't Salespeople spend all of their selling time with qualified
prospects rather than prospecting? Why do they spend 10% of their
available selling time cold-calling and following up with leads of
un-known quality (think trade-show leads)?

Because there aren't enough prospects!

Stuffing the funnel with leads

In an attempt to bolster the amount of time spent actively-selling,
we generate leads. Leads are the life-blood of sales. Leads keep our
pipelines full. Leads are the source of all revenue. As Martha Stewart
might say "leads are a good thing."

But leads aren't necessarily prospects and if they aren't
prospects, they won't be buyers anytime soon. Too many non-qualified
leads will kill your sales productivity, lower your revenue potential
and limit your ability to exceed sales quota.

Leads: The Sales Productivity Killer?

The answer isn't to provide more leads, it's to provide more qualified
prospects. Don't stuff the sales funnel with leads. Stuff the marketing
funnel with leads. The marketing funnel is where leads should be shaken
and sifted, helping qualified prospects fall through to the sales
funnel where they can be closed. The more unqualified leads that make
their way through to Sales, the less productive salespeople will be.

Lessons from the Gold Rush

I live in one of the historic California towns where the 49er gold rush
took place. You couldn't find gold unless you had good techniques
either panning for gold in rivers, or blasting through vast layers of
earth. Gold seekers were of course, known as "prospectors".

Prospectors couldn't find gold without a laborious search. And like
prospecting for gold, finding qualified prospects requires the right
techniques. However, a division of labor for executing those techniques
is crucial if prospectors are to maximize their return. If assayers
were asked to haul and mill the ore as well as inspect for content and
quality - investors would receive far fewer gold coins at the end of
the day.

hard to believe that the graduating class of 2008 is about to take

The Gold Feature MRD Technique

In a previous issue of the 280 Insider (June 2004) we discussed how to
use themes as a technique for writing MRDs (Market Requirements
Documents) and keeping your team and product releases focused. Another
powerful and useful approach is called the Gold Feature technique.

The idea behind the Gold Feature technique is that you choose a single
feature that is the absolute most important priority for the release,
and then you get the entire team to rally around it as the focus. This
single feature provides enough customer value to hang the entire
release on. It is compelling enough that all of your customers will
want to upgrade (and some potential new customers will be further
convinced to purchase). And it is simple enough to communicate from a
marketing and competitive point of view that it gives your product a
noticeable boost.

Ideally you should be able to describe the Gold Feature in one to five
words. Some examples might include: 1.) 30% Faster Performance 2.)
Import MS Word files or 3.) Double your battery life. It has to be
simple and very compelling - if your release has a long list of
features, but you can't find a one to five word value message to
communicate, it's going to be very hard to build a marketing campaign
and keep your product focus.

The Gold Feature technique is particularly effective if you are on
short release cycles or are doing a point release (1.1, 1.2, etc). Many
of your team members may want to include all kinds of other features
that can be of varying interest and value to your customers. If you can
get them focused on the one Gold Feature for the release (and in
agreement that everything else is a "nice to have" priority but that
you won't hold up the release for it), you'll have a much better chance
of success. You'll also have a higher likelihood of meeting a tight
schedule, as you can plan the release with more certainty if the Gold
Feature is the only critical path item.

I've used this technique successfully several times when working
with clients. One of the releases had a client-side piece of software
that was downloaded from the web, and the Gold Feature was "60% smaller
download," resulting in more rapid adoption by new customers. Another
was "Easier signup process", which led to 30% more customers completing
the signup process to try out the product.

Using the Gold Feature technique is an easy and powerful way to
keep your products and your team focused and on track. The result will
be a great product delivered on schedule that provides value to your
customers and a compelling marketing message.

Optimize your site so that new customers will find you

Can potential new customers really find your company and products on the web?

Imagine that you are one of your own target customers, and that you
haven't heard of your company yet. You decide to search the web to look
for companies that provide the products or services that your company
offers.

Think of one short phrase that you would type into a search engine to
find your company (not your company name). Now, using this same phrase,
go see if you can find your company in the major search engines. Make
sure you try each of the most popular search engines, as ranked by the
usage statistics:

Google 32%

Yahoo 25%

AOL (including Netscape) 19%

MSN 15%

Others 9%

Now go to each of these sites and type in "Marketing Consultant Silicon Valley" and see if you find The 280 Group.

Chances are you didn't find your company (unless you are already
incredibly well known in a specific category), and that you did find
the 280 Group.

I'm constantly amazed by the number of companies that do little or
nothing to optimize their positioning and placement in search engines.
They spend hours agonizing over content and design, and thousands of
dollars implementing and building their sites, yet they never benefit
because new customers don't find them.

Now consider this. By some estimates GOOGLE POWERS AN ESTIMATED 76%
OF THE SEARCHES ON THE WEB (largely because they provide results to AOL
and Yahoo).

Your business may not be one that needs new customers finding you
on their own, but I'm betting that's not the case. If you want to
remedy this situation, you'll have to embark on a search engine
optimization campaign for your site.

There are many factors to consider when optimizing your site. Here are just a few:

Public relations is communicating who you are, what you do and how
you make a difference. It's about having successful "relationships"

Here's another "creative" method of offline marketing that will take some effort on your part .... but no cash outlay.

Volunteer as a speaker for various business, educational, or other
organizations. This is a great way to reach a targeted audience and
brand yourself as an expert in their eyes.

Groups like your local Chamber Of Commerce, PTA, Garden Club, Hunt
Club, Single Parents, Home Owner's Association, VFW, Church, Little
League, Soccer Club, Kiwana's, VFW, American Legion, Moose Lodge,
Alumni Association, etc. hold meetings where they frequently need
speakers. Do some research and find out all such groups in your area
then contact them to volunteer your services as a speaker.

You'll have to do some work to prepare a talk pertinent in subject
matter to their interest .... of course. But the event itself as well
as the contacts you'll make create a great networking opportunity for
you.

People will be curious about what you do. The host will obviously
introduce you before you speak and include a little about "who you
are". Just make friends and share as appropriate when appropriate.

This is more about branding yourself in the community and reaching large groups while doing it.

An added benefit of this method is the opportunity to hone your
presentation/communication skills and practice simple networking.

I don't suggest setting up any kind of display of your "wares" .... but
you certainly may have some type of momento made available to the
guests. Perhaps something like mugs, pens, refrigerator magnets, and
such with your logo and website url. Maybe even a "gift basket" or 2 as
a door prize .... donated by you of course .... with your business card
inside. Just be subtle not obvious.

Of course do have plenty of business cards to share IF asked. Don't force them on anyone but be prepared.

The point is just to gain visibilty .... network .... make contacts .... and DEFINITELY follow-up afterward.

Another related tip is to be sure that any write-up of the event
for local print media includes not only your name as guest speaker ....
but something like your website url for curious readers also.

of technology conference and distributing your promotional products
there, you may choose the web address and have just as much success
with it.)

4. Company address – this takes a lot of space and many
promotional gifts just don’t have that kind of room. However, on
items like bumper stickers, key rings, and conference folders, room is
not that much of an issue and an address may draw customers right to
your door!

Experiment with different items and different information each time
you order promotional products. Find what works well and what
doesn’t and keep using that information that brings you the most

those feelings with having already accomplished it. Say to yourself,
"This nice meal is in celebration for having reached my profit goal for
this month". etc. Never generate money with the thoughts in mind to
fulfill another persons expectations.

Expect prosperity and abundance to arrive from unexpected sources and
in unexpected ways. Be open and willing to receive the good that the
higher forces want to give you. You may have read all these techniques
and how money forms in your life and forget about it later on. However
if you want real results, and don't want to let this information waste
away, than LOVE these techniques, practice and be persistent in using
them in order for you to attract abundance and prosperity that is
rightfully yours. There must always be some work on the mental and
emotional planes of our beings before you can see results in the
